Live or televised fights?

interesting conversation that i had with my girlfriend the other night (i always come up with some weird conversations that i inevitably end up bringing to work and starting up a lively discussion about e.g. can you call a guy that sews a seamstress, or can you only call him a taylor? why can't you call him a seamstress? or would the correct term be seamster? - and a more recent one, are feeling learnt? or are they part of your body? or are they linked to your "spirit", and for the purpose of this conversation, it had to be non-theosophically inclined)... more often than not, these conversations end up getting rather humourous and loud, but at other times it does get a bit heated, but it always (so far) has turned out pretty good as a lunchtime activity...

so where was i? oh yeah, the conversation that i had with my girlfriend the other night... after the kickboxing fights the other week, she commented that she didn't enjoy going to live fights, instead preferred to watch them on tv. as soon as she said that i was shocked, yes sir shocked! how could something *tinned* as a televised match ever compare to the enjoyment of being at the live event?

she then goes on to say that the reason why she likes watching them on the tv more is because she can see what the actual strikes are, which she apparently can't at the event itself, either due to the strikes being too fast, or the fighters have gotten in to such and angle that she can't see what's happening...

Personally, i don't have any problems with seeing the strikes most of the time (unless of course the speed of the strike and their position in the ring combine to totally block your view of what's happening)... i find that when i first started going to kickboxing fights, it was a bit difficult to try and keep track of what they're doing when they're going hammer and tongs at each other, but over time i guess i've learnt to build a full picture of the fight, not only from what strike connected, but also their body positioning and movement... i'm not saying that i can tell what every shot was when my view of the combatants is partially blocked, but i've got a fairly good idea :-)

guess that's why, when finances allow, i'll always go to a live thai/kickboxing event instead of watching it on tv... 'sides, part of the ticket price is to pay for the atmosphere as well ^_^

I'd tend to agree with watching fights (and games) on TV. Because you can see strikes and goals better, you have some sort of commentary, you get instant replays in case you blinked, and you get to see slow motions. True that there are exciting moments in live fights/games but this depends on what the sport is. Basketball, yes because the court is small enough to see what is happening. Rugby, maybe not..I went to a Bledisloe match once and all we see are guys running back and forth on the field and the sudden crowd cheers. Of course you won't be able to see anything when the crowds cheer so you stand up and cheer with them. Baseball, I think it is good both on tv and live.

i'd have to disagree with you regarding watching rugby live, i find that seeing the hits at the park is much more exciting than watching it on the tv. but then again that would have to do with your seating and proximity (or lack thereof) to the action. The pure excitement that comes with watching tackle-breaking run and offload to scoring a try, will only prompt me to high-5 my mates at the game, whereas i'm much more subdued when watching (or so i'd like to think) the game on the tv... 'sides, if you really do miss the crucial bit of the action, you can always catch the replay of it on the big screens around the park... i guess the best comparison that i can draw to illustrate my point would be the wellington 7s. it's so much better being there, than just watching it on the tv

and what about those round girls? that's why kit watches them live 'cause they never get shown on TV!

when we saw the Melbourne Tennis Cup earlier this year, i thought it would have been better to see it on TV for all the DVD-extras that came with it. but nothing would compare seeing, say, the Russian players or the Williams sisters live.

Well if Russian Groaners are involved then I guess live might be better. Good point on seating position Shakoo..perhaps it deserves another chance.

whenever i get the chance, i go to any live event of the sport(s) that i follow... i guess i could draw an analogy with a live str1p show and watching pr0n (not that i've ever done either of course ^_^ teeheeee) you may get better angles and *ahem* shots in pr0n, but the live show also has it's moments :-)
